Participating in the Sustainable Summer Crossroads of Conservation program would be an amazing opportunity for my personal goals because I plan on becoming a marine biologist and working towards obtaining and maintaining environmental stability in the ocean. Since I was four or five, I have been fascinated with the ocean and the many interesting creatures that call it home. I feel that this hands-on learning experience would be great for me because it would allow me to get a feel of what sustainability is truly about; especially being immersed in such a diverse and beautiful ecosystem as the Galapagos.
I believe that the best way to understand is to learn hands-on, from the source. I know that to be true for me. I am a strong believer that textbooks cannot replicate the experience that first-hand learning does. This lack of individuality and freedom to have my own unaltered interpretation takes away from the process of learning. Not only would participating in this program be an amazing learning opportunity; it would also feed my hunger and curiosity. The Galapagos, in particular, has a spectacular ecosystem for understanding what it means for an environment to be healthy and what it needs to be sustainable in the future.
